Oyabunmi has been a  student, instructor and choreographer  of West African Dance for more than 20 years.  She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science/Kinesiotherapy from Virginia Commonwealth University, and is a certified Yoga Instructor through the Yoga Institute.

  Oyabunmi was raised with the traditional philosophies of the Yoruba people of South West Nigeria, Southern Dahomey, and Togoland West Africa. Oyabunmi is trained extensively in Orisa priesthood,  Yoruba culture, and traditional rites. She became a priestess at the age of 8. Her original purpose of dance was spiritual and began at annual Orisha festivals for her patron goddess Oya within the confines of Oyotunji African Village. Oyabunmi began formal dance training under the auspices of Ezibu Muntu African Dance and Cultural Foundation where she studied traditional West African dance and went on to become principal dancer and dance captain apprentice. She began sharing through performance and various community programming using African dance as a vehicle of expression. After traveling to Senegal, West Africa, where she studied Sabar, the national dance, she returned to the US with the vision to fuse her passion for African dance with her educational background.

  She  continues to study with many world renowned master instructors and musicians in the art of traditional African Dance.  An  actress and an activist,  she débuts in the independent film, Sabar (www.Sabarthemovie.com).  She has been a guest performer in Benefit of the Kalahari Children’s Home of D’Kar, Botswana  and  also visited Mali  with the UN and Nothing But Nets distributing insecticide treated bed-netting. She is also the founder of Irunmole Dance and Drum Theatre.

 It is her mission to share and keep relevant traditional African Art.  Not only is she an established dancer, she also brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of fitness to share with all class participants.  Her passion for African dance and her educational background in Exercise Science in addition to her love of Yoga is the foundation for her African Dance Workout style which promotes wellness through ancient movement.
